Class Description: Materials will be supplied to make several brightly colored hanging ornaments from scraps of repurposed fabrics and handmade felt. In the first two-hour session we will learn the tricks to constructing the ornaments, and then prepare a piece of decorative felt that you will use in the second session. To start your felt, you will layer roving and sheer fabric, then roll it up in plastic, and I will take everyone’s pieces home to felt in my dryer. Then, at the second class, you will receive the finished felt pieces and can incorporate them into several more ornaments. We will also discuss the possibilities for embroidering your ornaments. There will be full written instructions so that you can make more at home.
List of items students need to bring: Optional: a pair of needle-nosed pliers if you have them. There will be some available to the class. Everything else is provided.
BIO: Mickie McCormic moved here in 2012 to be the Fiber Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center. She has been part of Pacific Textile Arts for more than a decade and has taught image transfer, felting, and doll making, as well as participating in PTArts gallery shows. This is the first time she is teaching the system she developed to make ornaments. The method started as a way to make cloth beads for jewelry, and they gradually became larger until in recent years they became Christmas baubles.
