BIO: Jennie Lee Henderson Textile Artist
A Mendocino coast resident for over four decades, Jennie is a familiar face at craft fairs and art shows.
Spinner, dyer, and award-winning weaver, Jennie is constantly exploring the possibilities of her art. She
began her fiber arts career while in high school, designing, sewing, and selling hand-dyed clothing. In the early 70’s she studied weaving in Denmark where she bought her first loom. After moving to the Mendocino Coast in 1977, she took up spinning and began knitting and selling handspun wool sweaters. She studied sheep and wool production in New Zealand, spent time in Oaxaca Mexico studying with Zapotec rug weavers and taught workshops in spinning, weaving and dyeing. A few years ago, she became interested in surface design and began using rusty objects to create designs on textiles and paper which has expanded into Eco Printing, a method of using leaves and other plant matter along with metal objects to transfer color to wool, silk, cotton, and paper. After taking several workshops with Australian textile artist India Flint, Jennie has been focusing on Eco-printing and the use of locally available material. “It is a magical process: unpredictable, exciting, and free of toxic chemicals. ”Jennie still weaves and spins and produces natural colored hand-spun wool rugs and is active in the local Fibershed movement
